Meet the AYJ Board: Gavin McKenna
Get to know one of our newest Board Members, Gavin McKenna, Founder of Reach Every Generation.
“Aside from being an AYJ Board Member, I…
Run two projects that I established 7 years ago. I deliver training to professionals around serious violence, the best practice when supporting young people, and I also utilise ‘lived experience’ to offer insight beyond the behaviour. I have a team of coaches who support young people in Essex at risk of crime and violence, and I set up a training centre for young people to learn new skills. I also love spending time with my wife and kids!”
“Being an AYJ Board Member means…
That I can be the bridge between young people and the decision-makers. I have a passion for young people and I want to see them succeed and break barriers. This role allows me to do that. I can share the views of young people and what matters to them, whilst challenging negative narratives and decisions that could otherwise hinder success and further marginalise young people.”
“I joined the fight for youth justice because…
Growing up I was caught up in the justice system, but I knew it was more than just my choices that led me to that point. I understand that processes, policies, environment, and lack of nurturing and support played a part. I don’t want young people, or anyone to be the victim of an unfair society. I believe we all deserve the right to succeed and live our best life. So, I spoke up and decided to join the fight for a fairer society for all!”
“In the next 5 years, I hope to see…
Myself and my team influence positive change within the youth justice system, seeing better outcomes for those who find themselves caught up in it, and a reduction of new entrants. We want to see more children and young adults diverted away from the youth justice system.”
“To me, youth justice means…
Addressing underlying needs that are the cause of certain behaviours. Providing opportunities for change and for hope to be restored.”
“One thing we can learn from children and young people is…
Resilience. They are so much more resilient and able to adapt than we give them credit for. Moreover, we could learn about their individual circumstances and their personal journey, rather than what they are doing or who they are.”
“For children and young people, I hope for a future where…
Hope is never taken from them, and opportunities are equal no matter their past. I hope to see a society where we nurture and support our young people, emotionally, physically, and mentally.”
“Dear my younger self…
Don’t let your past define you. You can achieve anything.”
Keep up to date with Gavin’s work…
