Young Advocates’ Peer Research: Process and Progress

Run in partnership with Leaders Unlocked and AYJ, and generously supported by BBC Children in Need, the Young Advocates for Youth Justice project allows children and young people with experience of the youth justice system to be part of a movement to drive positive change in youth justice around issues that are important to them.

Currently, the Young Advocates are working on their second peer research project. After the success of their first youth-led report – which focused on the priority topics of stereotypes, education and warning signs – the Advocates have been travelling to different areas of England and Wales to schools and secure facilities to conduct a new round of their own first-hand research. The new research report will focus on the themes of trauma, criminalisation, policing, and intervention and diversion.

During meetings, the Young Advocates have been given training in social and peer research, including skills such as interviewing, public speaking, presenting and leading workshops. They facilitate the research sessions, engaging other children with experience of the justice system through a combination of activities and exploring in depth the research priorities.

Once the research is complete, the Young Advocates will showcase their findings with a range of audiences, and the information shared in the peer-to-peer engagement will eventually be used to inform changes in policy, service design and practice within the youth justice system.

Do you know anyone who would be interested in taking part in one of these conversations?

The Young Advocates are looking to hear from others with experience of the youth justice system. The workshops are designed and delivered by the Young Advocates, at a place and time that suits you. We will provide refreshments and vouchers as a thank you for taking part.
